Carmack Picks 360 Over PS3

January 11, 2007 - John Carmack, co-found of id Software and a pioneer in the games industry, admits that he loves developing for the PC more than any other system. However, in an interview with Game Informer, Carmack stated his admiration for Xbox 360 while questioning some of Sony's design choices for PlayStation 3.

"Microsoft has done a spectacular job on the 360 support," Carmack told GI. "I've been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they've done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It's not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything. I was not a fan of the PlayStation 2 and the way its architecture was set up. With the PlayStation 3, it's not even that it's ugly--they just took a design decision [to use an asymmetric CPU] that wasn't the best from a development standpoint."

That doesn't mean id won't develop games for PS3. But it does suggest that Sony's new console won't be a high priority.

Since I was a previous Xbox owner and now a 360 owner. I knew what to expect from the standpoint of Live. Live is everything the Xbox community is about. The PS3 does not even come close to using this type of messaging and friend's list. Plus we have several exclusive games like Gears of War and Halo to attribute to the success of the console. The PS3 doesn't even have GTA as an exclusive anymore. There are still issues with the 360 though, there need to be more genres than just shooters. There are a few other games outside this genre but we need more to be totally successful.

OK, not surprising a US developer would choose to develop on a US platform over a Japanese one. The key underlying point being that he prefers to develop for the PC, the technical architecture/toolkit of the 360 and the PC are very very very similar. The PS3's cell architecture is not.

But, it's fairly evident that the PS3 is going to have a tough time in this generation.

I just don't think there's as much demand for the $600 console/Blu-Ray player as Sony might have thought. Sure, they sold out their initial shipment and the early adopters sucked 'em down. BUT. I was in my local BestBuy yesterday.... Wii's, big empty case with the sign NINTENDO WII - SORRY SOLD OUT. One lonely 360 Core system sitting in it's cage behind the ironic sign MICROSOFT 360 - SORRY SOLD OUT. There were no fewer than forty PS3's stacked up, filling their cage, collecting dust.

POSTED AT IGN:

Gabe Newell Disses PS3
Labels Sony's system a "total disaster."
by Patrick Kolan, IGN AU
Australia, January 15, 2007 - According to an interview in Game Informer magazine, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell has a few bitter words to share on the PlayStation 3. He doesn't pull his punches, calling the system a 'total disaster'.

The quote, sourced from the NeoGAF forums, must be a bitter pill for Sony to swallow, considering the prominence of the source from which it came. Newell is unquestionably a heavyweight in the industry - and another high profile name added to a list of developers voicing dissent against Sony's console.

According to Newell, "The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a "do over". Just say, "This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it". The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, Nintendo Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing."

Them's fightin' words, we think.
